Etiology, clinical findings and treatment of SJOGREN´S SYNDROM are discussed in connection with the report of a typical case seen at E. NT. department of N. M. C.
The case was a 35 year old, house wife who had hyperpigmentation of the skin, pain on both arms, coldness of fingers, swollen parotid glands on both sides with some tenderness and swelling of knee joints since over three years. She later´ developed dryness of lips, oral cavity and pharynx together with dryness in the eyes L. E. cells were found in the blood, gamma-globulin and SR were persistently elevated as well as the thymol turbidity test and test for rheumatoid factor. The patient showed a typical keratoconjunctivitis sicca and sialography demonstrated a pronounced chronic parotitis.
The patient had been treated for long time in other departments without definite diagnosis in spite of typical history and clinical findings which demonstrates the importance of "looking at the symptoms on the same plane", though modern specialization of medicine makes this more difficult.
